What are immunizations?

Immunizations, also called vaccinations, help your body protect you from diseases. Vaccines are medical treatments given as a shot or nasal spray that contains a weakened or dead germ.

When introduced into your body, your immune system recognizes the germ from the vaccine as harmful and creates antibodies against it. Antibodies are a type of protein that fights diseases so  you don’t get sick or become seriously ill.

If you come in contact with the germ at another point in time, your immune system remembers the germ and uses those antibodies to fight it off, protecting you from the virus.

When do I need immunizations?
